The American Optometric Association recommends eye exams in children at the following times:

           - 6-12 months of age
           - 3 years old
           - prior to 1st grade
           - every 1-2 years while                          in school

It is crucial to detect eye problems early in life to assure proper development. A subtle eye turn or a large difference in prescription between the eyes can lead to a condition called amblyopia or "lazy
eye." This can cause blindness if identified too late. However, if it is discovered early, vision in that eye can often be saved with appropriate management.

Learn more about amblyopia and the Ohio Amblyopia Registry. If you are curious about how well young
children are able to see as their eyes are developing, check out the vision simulation cards.
